CANTON, NC, Aug. 19, 2014 (Citizen-Times) -The company that owns the paper mill in Haywood County won't get an incentive package worth $12 million from the Republican-controlled state legislature, House lawmakers decided on Friday.

Evergreen Packaging wanted the money to help pay for new natural gas fired boilers. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is forcing it to replace its old coal-fired boilers, which the company said would cost $50 million.

It employs about 1,000 people average annual wage, including benefits, of $78,300.
