EVANSVILLE, IN, May 20, 2013 (Local News) -Three of the largest industries that buy power from Big Rivers Electric Corp. have created a lobbying coalition to oppose a pair of large rate increases that Big Rivers is proposing as it braces for the loss of its two largest customers.

Big Rivers officials have said that two rate increases that could push rural electric bills some 40 percent higher than today are necessary to make up for some of the loss of revenue when Century Aluminum's Hawesville smelter leaves the Big Rivers system on Aug. 20, followed by Rio Tinto Alcan's Sebree smelter (which Century is the process of buying) on Jan. 31, 2013.
