WAYNESVILLE, NC, Feb. 12, 2018 (Local News) -A major investment to replace coal-fired boilers with natural gas at Evergreen Packaging in Canton is increasing the mill’s property value, which in turn means a higher property tax bill.
But the county will lessen the blow with a tax credit forgiving a portion of the mill’s higher tax bill. The mill would have had to pay an additional $102,000 in property taxes for 2017 as a result of the upgrades it’s making, but a tax break will reduce that amount by half.
County commissioners held a public hearing on Evergreen’s tax credit last week, but it was a mere formality. The county commissioners conceptually agreed to the property tax break in 2014, but had to go through the motions of a public hearing before actually awarding it.
