Corner Brook mill defends plan to burn tires for energy in Newfoundland
In recent coverage of the paper mill's proposal to burn shredded tire material in a test trial, some of the plan's critics have said the mill does not have the most advanced technology in its boiler or in its stacks to effectively burn off or remove harmful materials generated during the process.
In particular, those opposed think the mill should have fluidized bed burners in its boiler system and an electrostatic precipitator in its smoke stack.
The mill did upgrade the technology in its grate, or stoker, style boiler in 2007 and its stacks were fitted out with venturi wet scrubbers and dust collectors in 1995, but does not have the bed burners and precipitator some have called for.
