WASHINGTON, DC, Feb. 6, 2018 (Press Release) -American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) President and CEO Donna Harman praised the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for finalizing its list of renewable, alternative fuels to include railroad ties treated with newer preservatives. She issued the following statement:

“EPA’s decision to include railroad ties treated with newer preservatives on its updated list of approved non-waste boiler fuels is welcome news that recognizes market trends and creates new opportunities for renewable energy production. Burning recycled railroad ties provides a dry fuel that improves combustion, extracts useful energy and diverts materials from landfills. With this rule, mills can burn a fuller range of rail-tie derived fuel with greater confidence. As we look ahead, we hope the EPA continues to expand the number of facilities that can use these fuels.”
