HALIFAX, NS, May 16, 2011 (Chronicleherald.ca) -A Queens County paper mill may be forced to close because of power rate hikes being proposed by Nova Scotia Power, the plant's owner said Friday.

The provincial electrical utility is seeking a 13.5 per cent increase for its two largest industrial customers, AbitibiBowater and NewPage Corp. The figure climbs to 16.6 per cent when fuel adjustments and Efficiency Nova Scotia charges are included.

"It's pretty obvious that any increase in rates do have a significant impact on the mill's viability," Pierre Choquette, a spokesman for AbitibiBowater, said in an interview from Montreal.
