GOLBEY, France , Dec. 13, 2019 (Press Release) -The Minister of Ecological Transition selected the project submitted by Green Valley Energie (GVE) as part of the CRE5.3 call for tenders. This project, supported by a partnership between Norske Skog Golbey (NSG) and Véolia Industries Global Solutions (Véolia), involves the design and construction of a new biomass cogeneration plant: Green Valley Energie.

What is Green Valley Energy?

  • This new industrial mill aims to produce steam for all Green Valley industries, as well as green electricity.
  • The energy will be produced from waste from the production of pulp and biomass in the form of class B wood.
  • The biomass cogeneration unit will produce 160t/h of steam, it will be coupled to a 25 MW turbo-alternator unit. It will be operated by Veolia.

This project has many environmental, social and economic advantages: the reduction in the use of gas boilers, and thus in the consumption of fossil fuels by 85 GWh/year, the creation of direct and indirect jobs and attractiveness of the platform Green Valley for new investors

This raises major challenges for all the partners involved:

For NSG: To ensure the sustainability of its activity thanks to a controlled steam cost on the long term

For Veolia: Strengthening its collaboration with the region for its economical development, the ecological transition of sustainable territories and cities, research and innovation, as well as training, employment and integration.

The next steps:

After this important step, it remains to finalize the studies, obtain the necessary authorizations and financing plan to initiate construction by the end of 2022.

About Norske Skog Golbey

A subsidiary of the Norwegian group Norske Skog, one of the world leaders in the publishing paper industry, Norske Skog Golbey is the largest newsprint production unit in Western Europe. In fact, the plant produces an average of 600,000 tonnes of paper for the printing of the largest European press titles and advertising leaflets. The paper mill employs 325 people and its location in Epinal-Golbey 25 years ago created about 1,500 jobs. For its production needs, the mill uses 500,000 tonnes of recovered paper from selective collection from French households each year, and 500,000 gross tonnes of wood in the form of co-products from sustainably managed northeast forests. By recycling these materials, the paper mill naturally fits into a virtuous scheme of circular economy. Co-initiator of the Green Valley business cluster, the plant is currently developing various diversification projects in the promising fields of bio-materials, renewable energies and biosourced chemistry.
