MADRID, Spain, Dec. 29, 2021 (Press Release) -Ence’s renewable energy generation plant in Puertollano, Biollano, has recently completed the audit process of the Sure verification scheme, which guarantees the sustainability of the generation process from sustainable biomass sources, which are also evaluated. It is about consistent proximity biomass, mainly plant remains from crops such as vines or olive trees, fruit trees, and remains of pruning from surrounding parks and gardens.

In this way, the company’s renewable energy plant with biomass in Puertollano has validated its adaptation in a pioneering way in the sector to the sustainability requirements of the Renewable Energy Directive (EU) 2018/2001 (REDII), a European regulation which establishes various criteria that all biomass used in the bioenergy sector must meet, focused on ensuring its sustainability, a correct mass balance, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and energy efficiency.

It is one more step within Ence’s commitment to the sustainability of the biomass it manages. Ence’s biofactories in Pontevedra and Navia and the company’s biomass power generation plants in Huelva, Mérida, Jaén and Ciudad Real, have previously obtained this certification, making Ence the first company in Europe to start the verification of the sustainability of its biomass energy production process through this standard.

CEGANOR has been the entity responsible for auditing the process, since it is the only Spanish company recognized and authorized by the Sure scheme to perform this service. The development of the certification audits had the express recognition of the verifier, who highlighted the high degree of implementation of the reference standard by Ence Puertollano, the ability to anticipate the energy complex to the new European Directive, even meeting some requirements before its publication, and the sectorial leadership developed by Ence throughout the process.

Having already reached the milestone of certifying its own biomass and direct purchase, the company has begun to deploy an Advisory and Collaboration Plan with all suppliers of the Puertollano plant, with the aim of ensuring that all agricultural, forestry and industrial biomass that supply the plants acquire this certification. To this end, work is already underway to launch the training, implementation and certification tasks of the entire chain of collaborators.

The company is once again at the forefront of the sustainability of biomass as an energy source, a path that began in 2017, when it unveiled its Decalogue for the Sustainability of Biomass as Fuel, a pioneering initiative in Spanish companies. implementation to guarantee total sustainability in the use of biomass and care for the environment in its use as an energy source, based on the criteria established by some of the most important environmental organizations in Europe.

Ence is the first Spanish company in the production of renewable energy with agroforestry biomass. It has a total generation capacity of 266 MW in its independent power plants, to which are added 112 MW from its cellulose biofactories. Biomass is a renewable and manageable source of energy, which has great development potential in Spain. In addition, it has great environmental advantages, reducing emissions and contributing to the transition towards a low-carbon energy model, as well as generating employment and activity in rural ar
