Total North American carload volume fell 6.2% in the week and year-to-date was 4.3% higher. Grain was the lone commodity group to post an increase compared with the same week in 2014, up 4%, AAR said.Read more
Caraustar on Feb. 19 said it closed the acquisition of The Newark Group after it cleared a US Dept of Justice (DOJ) antitrust review that did not require any divestitures.
Caraustar, owned by private equity firm H.I.G. Capital, announced the merger in July (P&PW, July 11, 2014, p. 1). Market sources told RISI that the DOJ was investigating the merger up until early January. Newark Group is owned by DDJ Capital, an investment company.Read more
OAKLAND, CA, Feb. 13, 2015 (RISI) -North American forest products railroad freight rose 7.9% in the week ending Feb. 7, 2015, to 19,138 carloads, the Assn of American railroads reported. Volume through five weeks of 2015 at 95,374 carloads was 5.5% above the same period of 2014.
US forest products freight in the week was up 7.3%, Canada rose 9.5% and Mexico dropped 52.1%.
