OAKLAND, CA, Aug. 8, 2016 (RISI) -Several major North American railroad carriers reported mixed pulp and paper freight results in the week and year-to-date periods ending July 30.
Canadian Nationalpulp and paper carloads in the week ending July 30 were down 7.9% to 3,200 carloads and through 30 weeks of 2016 were 6.9% lower to 96,253 carloads. Lumber/wood surged 24.9% in the week and were 9.6% higher year-to-date.

US forest products freight in the week dropped 15.9% from a year ago, Canada was up 6.5% and Mexico jumped 65%. Year-to-date, US volume was down 7.2%, Canada was up 2.3% and Mexico was 42.5% lower.

Lumber and wood products volume was mixed for the carriers, with overall North American forest products freight down 3.4% through six months.
Year-to-date declines in pulp and paper freight were reported by Canadian National, BNSF, Union Pacific, and CSX. Canadian Pacific showed an increase.

US forest products freight in the week was down 13%, Canada was off 0.9% and Mexico dropped 56.5% from 2015.
Genesee & Wyoming reported its pulp and paper rail freight in May was down 8.5% from a year ago to 13,666 carloads. Lumber/forest products was up 6.5% to 11,603 carloads.

US forest products freight in the week was down 6.9% and year-to-date was 6.7% lower. Canada was down 5.9% in the week and 2.8% higher year-to-date. Mexico was 76% lower in the week and 49% lower year-to-date.
Total North American rail carloads in the week were down 5.5% and through five months was down 12.5%.
