OAKLAND, CA, Oct. 7, 2017 (RISI) -The Port of New Orleans said Friday that terminal operations were continuing as normal as officials monitor Hurricane Nate, expected to make landfall in the north Gulf Coast region on Saturday night as a Category 2 storm.
The port said the mouth of the Mississippi River was closed to all inbound and outbound traffic. Port officials were monitoring National Weather Service advisories and coordinating with all deep-draft ports, US Army Corps of Engineers, US Coast Guard, pilot associations, and industry stakeholders.Read more
OAKLAND, CA, Sept. 12, 2017 (RISI) -Major railroads and ports in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina were reporting progress toward restarting operations following impacts from Tropical Storm Irma over the weekend.
Rail carrier Norfolk Southern said Sept 12 efforts were underway to restore service to areas impacted by the storm such as removing trees from the tracks and assessing overall track conditions.Read more
OAKLAND, CA, May 12, 2017 (RISI) -Pulp and paper railroad freight volume was broadly lower among a group of major US and Canadian carriers through 18 weeks of 2017, with lumber/wood products more favourable, according to key metrics reports.
CNreported pulp and paper freight in the week ending May 6, 2017, was up 6.6% to 3,138 carloads, but was down 1.1% year-to-date at 58,148 carloads. Lumber/wood products was 3.2% higher in the week to 3,281 carloads and year-to-date was up 0.2% to 59,538 carloads.Read more
OAKLAND, CA, March 24, 2017 (RISI) -The Assn of American Railroads reported total North American forest products freight in the week ending March 18 at 17,634 carloads was down 3.9% from a year ago, and through 11 weeks at 191,222 carloads was 6% below year-ago levels.
In the week, US forest products volume was off 0.7% to 9,910 carloads, Canada was down 7.9% to 7,697 carloads, and Mexico was up 58.8% to 27 carloads. Through March 18, US forest products freight was down 5% to 108,536 carloads, Canada was down 7.3% to 82,467 carloads, and Mexico was up 6.3% to 219 carloads.Read more
OAKLAND, CA, Jan. 13, 2017 (RISI) -Genesee & Wyoming reported its pulp and paper rail freight in December was down 6.1% to 13,865 carloads, and lumber and wood products were 6.6% lower to 10,821 carloads.
For the fourth quarter, pulp and paper freight was down 8.4% to 39,578 carloads and lumber/wood products was 3.6% lower to 33,450 carloads.
The company’s total traffic in the quarter was up 3.8% to 402,939 carloads, with largest commodity groups coal and coke up 19% and agricultural products 7.9% higher.Read more

CNreported its pulp and paper freight in the week ending Dec. 3 was down 1.5% to 3,390 carloads and through 48 weeks of the year was 6.3% lower 153,425 carloads. Lumber/wood products in the week was up 8.3% to 3,252 carloads and year-to-date was 7.8% higher to 157,518 carloads.Read more
