OAKLAND, CA, Dec. 9, 2016 (RISI) -North American railroads reported mixed pulp and paper freight in the week ending Dec. 3, and mostly lower through 48 weeks of 2016. Lumber and wood products volumes were mostly higher.
CNreported its pulp and paper freight in the week ending Dec. 3 was down 1.5% to 3,390 carloads and through 48 weeks of the year was 6.3% lower 153,425 carloads. Lumber/wood products in the week was up 8.3% to 3,252 carloads and year-to-date was 7.8% higher to 157,518 carloads.Read more

Lumber and wood products were mixed to positive, and two companies – Norfolk Southern and Genesee-Wyoming – reported mixed pulp and paper volumes and revenues in their third quarter and year-to-date financial results.Read more
OAKLAND, CA, Oct. 7, 2016 (RISI) -North American total forest products rail freight was down 3.9% from a year ago in the week ending Oct. 1 to 18,470 carloads, theAssn of American Railroadsreported. Volume through 39 weeks of the year was also 3.9% lower to 704,616 carloads.
US forest products freight was down 7.9% in the week and 7.8% lower year-to-date. Canadian volume was up 1.8% in the week and 1.9% higher year to date. Mexico’s volume was up 113% and down 44% respectively, AAR showed.Read more
OAKLAND, CA, Aug. 12, 2016 (RISI) -Genesee & Wyoming reported its North American pulp and paper rail freight in July was down 9.5% from a year ago to 14,094 carloads.
The company said the decrease was “primarily due to decreased shipments across most of G&W’s regions.”
Lumber & Forest Products freight in July was down 3.1% to 11,309 carloads. Total carloads were down 5.9% with coal down 8.7%.Read more
OAKLAND, CA, Aug. 8, 2016 (RISI) -Several major North American railroad carriers reported mixed pulp and paper freight results in the week and year-to-date periods ending July 30.
Canadian Nationalpulp and paper carloads in the week ending July 30 were down 7.9% to 3,200 carloads and through 30 weeks of 2016 were 6.9% lower to 96,253 carloads. Lumber/wood surged 24.9% in the week and were 9.6% higher year-to-date.Read more
OAKLAND, CA, July 15, 2016 (RISI) -North American forest products railroad freight was down 6.9% in the latest week ending July 9, 2016, to 17,377 carloads, the Assn of American Railroads reported. Volume through 27 weeks was 3.4% lower to 490,477 carloads.
US forest products freight in the week dropped 15.9% from a year ago, Canada was up 6.5% and Mexico jumped 65%. Year-to-date, US volume was down 7.2%, Canada was up 2.3% and Mexico was 42.5% lower.Read more
OAKLAND, CA, July 1, 2016 (RISI) -Four of five Class I railroads surveyed by RISI showed 6-26% declines in pulp and paper carload freight through the last week of June, according to weekly metric reports. Lumber and wood products volume was mixed for the carriers, with overall North American forest products freight down 3.4% through six months.
Year-to-date declines in pulp and paper freight were reported by Canadian National, BNSF, Union Pacific, and CSX. Canadian Pacific showed an increase.Read more
