Boxmakers must by Aug. 1 provide packaging to Amazon that meets a new Amazon rule or be fined $1.99/unit. Vendors likely to face fines have already been alerted, a boxmaker in Chicago said. Amazon is "serious about it," the contact said.
"It'll probably take six months to understand the full impact, especially during the holidays, but I think some of (the Amazon business) will go away," the boxmaker said.Read more
OAKLAND, CA, June 21, 2019 (PPI Pulp & Paper Week) -International Paper (IP) CEO Mark Sutton said this week that a planned machine conversion project at its Riverdale mill in Selma, AL, will allow North America's largest containerboard and corrugated producer to make unique high-quality boxes that will double as a shipping container and a highly colorful print product that can sell product at a retail store.
Sutton said such a "corrugated package almost becomes a consumer package," during his presentation at the Vertical Research Partners conference this week.Read more
OAKLAND, CA, May 31, 2019 (PPI Pulp & Paper Week) -A second major kraft linerboard project with global implications was confirmed this week.
Stora Enso said it would eliminate coated printing and writing output at its Oulu mill in Finland by September 2020 and convert one machine, the No. 7, by December 2020 to making 450,000 tonnes/yr of kraft linerboard. Stora Enso said PM No. 7's new output "will target global export markets."Read more

OAKLAND, CA, Jan. 17, 2019 (RISI) -DS Smith North America plans for the installation of a 110-in corrugator at its new Lebanon, IN, box plant. The plant is to be operating by yearend.
It is to be a full-line corrugated operation and include pre-print press capability, and span almost 550,000 ft2. The groundbreaking for construction of the plant began this month.
The project cost is about $106 million, according to estimates.Read more
OAKLAND, CA, Nov. 30, 2018 (PPI Pulp & Paper Week) -US box shipments are on track to grow for a fifth straight year in 2018, and corrugated packagers also are growing in a smaller, non-box segment involving direct sales of sheets to end users.
RISI VP for packaging Ken Waghorne pointed to sheets for in-store displays, and for mini-flute corrugated converted at folding carton plants, slip-sheets used for goods shipped shrink wrapped on pallets, single-face corrugated, and fan-fold corrugated used in box-on-demand or so-called automated box maker systems.Read more
