In the past seven years, Stone built his latest company KapStone Paper and Packaging from a $180 million investment in 2005 into the fifth largest North American containerboard producer and largest kraft paper supplier following 2013’s $1 billion acquisition of Longview Fibre Paper and Packaging. Rock-Tenn Co. and MeadWestvaco Corp. have entered into a definitive combination agreement to create a leading global provider of consumer and corrugated packaging ("NewCo") in a transaction with a combined equity value of $16 billion. Atlantic Packaging Products Ltd. has created a new joint venture sheet feeder located in Carol Stream, Ill. The new joint venture, BlackHawk Corrugated, will be co-owned and operated by Atlantic and its JV partner StandFast Packaging of Addison, Ill. Atlantic's investment in BlackHawk will exceed $40 million and create in excess of 100 new jobs in the region. BlackHawk is expected to be fully operational by late 2015.Read more

A new study shows the corrugated industry continues to dramatically decrease its use of wax coatings. In 2013, the industry used 39 percent less wax than in 2002, when wax usage was first measured. The reduction brings the total waxed corrugated volume to just below 3 percent of total corrugated volume produced in 2013 compared to 5 percent of total volume in 2002.
During RISI’s International Containerboard Conference earlier this month in Chicago, four AICC members took the stage to discuss how independent converters are changing the demand curve for containerboard. Tyler Howland of Sound Packaging, David Deline of Deline Box & Display, Greg Arvanigian of Arvco Container Corp., and Joe Hodges of Mid-Atlantic Packaging discussed what they ask of their paper suppliers.
