BRUSSELS, Nov. 28, 2019 (Fastmarkets RISI) -The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) has raised concerns over the potential health risks posed by food contact materials (FCMs) made of melamine-formaldehyde resin (MFH). These include re-useable to-go coffee cups and tableware made with bamboo fibers.
In a position paper released earlier this week, the BfR warns consumers against using these tableware with hot liquids. “The reason is that at higher temperatures, hazardous melamine and formaldehyde can migrate from the material into food,” the BfR said.Read more
BRUSSELS, Nov. 1, 2018 (PPI Europe) -The members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have adopted a complete ban on single-use cutlery, cotton buds, straws and stirrers from 2021. These products represent over 70% of marine litter, they said.
The MEPs have also added oxo-plastics and certain polystyrenes to the draft, such as bags or packaging and fast-food containers made of expanded polystyrene.Read more

BRUSSELS, Jan. 5, 2017 (PPI Europe) -Stora Enso has sold its 100% share in its Finnish subsidiary Formeca to Finnish specialized engineering and machine construction firm Amitec. The value of the deal was not disclosed.
Upon completion of the deal, Stora Enso will become a reseller of Formeca machines and will continue to support and consult customers on packaging automation solutions, Stora Enso said in a statement.Read more
BRUSSELS, Aug. 4, 2016 (PPI Europe) -Sical’s Lumbres mill, a subsidiary of the Rossmann group, has resumed production on its 45,000 tonne/yr containerboard machine following a major upgrade of the PM’s press section.
The revamp was carried out by Italy’s Toscotec with the aim of improving press dryness performance, liner top side printability and machine runnability.
According to Toscotec, the line is now producing the targeted quality.Read more

The migration of mineral oil components from paperboard packaging materials into various foodstuffs in particular has been investigated in detail, reflecting a growing concern in Europe and resulting in a number of calls from NGOs for EU-wide regulation, functional barriers to separate food from packaging and/or allowable limits for the chemicals in question.Read more
BRUSSELS, May 19, 2016 (PPI Europe) -Stora Enso will invest Euro 70 million ($79 million) in a new polyethylene (PE) extrusion coating plant and an automated roll warehouse at its Imatra mills in Finland.
The investment aims to increase its capacity to produce extrusion coated products and enable the firm to meet increasing customer demand for food service board and liquid packaging board, the firm said in a statement.Read more
