With a nationwide rail shuttle network and growing container volumes, the Port of Gothenburg is described as being a pivotal factor in the emergence of the region as a logistics hub.

In the citation, the Gothenburg Region is described as being an “exceptional distribution location” with strong regional growth in the consumer market and in industry. The Port of Gothenburg is highlighted specifically as being a key reason for the award, and where rail logistics is an essential part.

Investments in Värö sawmill

“In April last year, we announced our plans to build a cross-laminated timber (CLT) facility at Värö. We can now see that our investment in the CLT facility will also make it possible for us to improve the flow and customer offering for our sawn timber, and have therefore decided to make additional investments in Värö,” said Jörgen Lindquist, President of the Södra Wood business area.

Investment will mainly be focused on trimming and drying capacity, but also to some extent on log sorting as well as sawing and green sorting.

US exporters warned of pending shortages of empty containers, spot rates to Asia increasing

Additionally, export spot rates to Asia are beginning to increase as space on vessels leaving US ports tightens. The World Container Index Los Angeles to Shanghai rate had climbed to $450 per FEU as of Feb. 13, from $355 on Dec. 12.

“The imminent thing is the escalating number of blank sailings. That is going to have an impact on the influx of equipment to the US,” said Uffe Ostergaard, president of Hapag-Lloyd Americas.
