Smurfit Kappa invests $36 million to expand its paper sack business in US

DUBLIN, Ireland, Feb. 20, 2020 (Press Release) -Smurfit Kappa has announced its strategy to expand its paper sack business in the Americas in a $36 million investment.

As part of the investment, a new cutting-edge Windmöller production line that will increase the company’s sack production by 100 million additional units per year will begin operating in 2021 in Palmira, Colombia. A similar project at Smurfit Kappa’s paper sack plant in the Dominican Republic was recently successfully undertaken.

POINT TUPPER, NS , Dec. 17, 2019 (Press Release) -Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB), Port Hawkesbury Paper and IFE Project Management Canada (IFE) announced today the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) formalizing their collaboration on the potential Pirate Harbour Wind Farm in Nova Scotia.

The MOU confirms CIB will conduct due diligence work with Port Hawkesbury Paper and IFE during the project evaluation and planning phase. CIB’s work could lead to an investment in the project, subject to all standard due diligence and decision making.

NEW YORK, Feb. 19, 2020 (Local News) -Jeff Bezos may have pledged $10 billion to fight climate change, but critics are slamming the billionaire for not making changes closer to home first and reducing the amount of packaging used to send out Amazon parcels.

"Could he please start with his ridiculous packaging that he leaves on our doorstep??? Perhaps the amazon delivery could collect the significant waste left behind," one Amazon shopper wrote on Twitter.

US exporters warned of pending shortages of empty containers, spot rates to Asia increasing

NEW YORK, Feb. 19, 2020 (Journal of Commerce) -Carriers are warning US exporters that with Chinese factories crippled for a third consecutive week and carrier announcements of more than 80 blank sailings in February and March, the shortage of empty containers beginning to surface in the US interior will intensify in the coming weeks.

Additionally, export spot rates to Asia are beginning to increase as space on vessels leaving US ports tightens. The World Container Index Los Angeles to Shanghai rate had climbed to $450 per FEU as of Feb. 13, from $355 on Dec. 12.
