Short-term production adjustment at Södra’s sawmills

The move is in response to lower demand for sawn timber in the months ahead. The stoppages are expected to reduce production by 30,000 m³.

Södra’s sawmills have processed a higher share of spruce over the past six months due to the infestation of spruce bark beetle. The assessment is that most of the year’s timber from forest infested with spruce bark beetle will have been handled by the end of the year. For this reason, Södra is able to adapt its production in the short term while fully meeting its obligations in relation to its members.

Teamsters Canada Rail Conference at Canadian National say could strike as early as Nov. 19.

Approximately 3000 conductors, trainpersons and yard persons voted 99.2% in favour of strike action last month. The union will give at least 72 hours’ notice of any strike action. 

“We will continue to negotiate in good faith with Canadian National in hopes of reaching a negotiated settlement. To that end, we will not be bargaining in the press or discussing the sticking points publicly at this time,” explained the president of the TCRC, Lyndon Isaak.

The topic was: „Producer, receivers and  operators - all link in the supply chain process”.

Before the panel discussion started, presentations were given by Wan Xu Dong, CEO at Beijing Trans Eurasia International Logistics Co. Ltd, and Alan Bog, IFPTA President and Commercial Manager Euroports Asia. Dong spoke about the Eurasia Train Transportation Model, known as „One belt one road“, while Bog adressed “Ports and distribution developments in line of market growth”.

G2 Ocean to strengthen its digital footprint

Since the company launched in 2017, it has had a continuous focus on developing and implementing new digital solutions for its customer, employees and partners. There have been several and projects within the digitalisation drive of G2. In 2018, the company initiated over ten innovation projects, one of them being the Smart Bill of Lading (B/L) project. The project uses blockchain technology to issue and distribute Bill of Lading and other belonging shipping documents, and a pilot trial was successfully completed in co-operation with three of G2 Ocean’s customers in February this year.

Only 2% of the world’s 1.2 million seafarers are women. Of those, 94 per cent work in the cruise industry. The number of women in our part of shipping is alarmingly low. And Grieg Star states: „We have to admit we are not as good as we want to be. Still, to us, a seafarer is a seafarer, regardless of colour, gender or sexual orientation. We believe diversity is key to success, and that is why we strive to have more female seafarers on board our ships.“
