LONDON, Nov. 28, 2019 (Press Release) -The plastic packaging produced by supermarkets in the UK has risen to more than 900,000 tonnes a year – despite public commitments to cut down.

Today we release, with partner Greenpeace, the new report Checking Out on Plastics II: Breakthroughs and backtracking from supermarkets, revealing that seven of the top 10 supermarkets had increased the plastic packaging they use, also known as their ‘plastic footprint’.

Only Waitrose, Tesco and Sainsbury’s have managed to achieve small reductions.

German BfR warns over potential health risks posed by bamboo cups and tableware

BRUSSELS, Nov. 28, 2019 (Fastmarkets RISI) -The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) has raised concerns over the potential health risks posed by food contact materials (FCMs) made of melamine-formaldehyde resin (MFH). These include re-useable to-go coffee cups and tableware made with bamboo fibers.

In a position paper released earlier this week, the BfR warns consumers against using these tableware with hot liquids. “The reason is that at higher temperatures, hazardous melamine and formaldehyde can migrate from the material into food,” the BfR said.

ESPOO, Finland, Nov. 28, 2019 (Press Release) -Valmet will deliver key technology for Bracell’s project to build a new pulp production line at the mill located in Lençóis Paulista, São Paulo state, Brazil. Valmet’s delivery includes an evaporation plant and a white liquor plant, in which the lime kilns are fueled with gasified biomass.

The order was included in Valmet's orders received of the third quarter 2019. The value of the delivery will not be disclosed. However, a project of this size and scope is typically valued around EUR 200-250 million.

UETERSEN, Germany , Nov. 27, 2019 (Press Release) -Feldmuehle GmbH, leading manufacturer of label and flexible packaging papers, launched already in 2009 the new development of a label paper with 40 percent waste paper content (LabelSet PCW).

As part of Feldmuehle’s realignment and the discussion on sustainability, work is underway to develop new papers based on recycling fibres. I.e. from the second quarter of 2020, the portfolio will be expanded by another wet-strength label paper and will be available to the market.
