Metsä Board aims for fossil free mills as part of company’s 2030 sustainability targets

The ambitious targets includes both emissions from the company’s own energy production (scope 1) as well as purchased energy (scope 2). Currently, 82% of the energy used at Metsä Board mills is fossil free.

In addition, Metsä Board is aiming for a 30% reduction in water use per product tonne and a minimum of a 10% energy efficiency improvement by 2030 compared to the 2018 level. These will also play an important role in reaching the fossil free mills target.

Stora Enso has biological assets in Sweden, Finland, Brazil, Uruguay, China and Laos through its own subsidiaries, joint operations and indirectly through equity accounted investments. The biological assets consist of standing trees to be used as raw material in pulp and mechanical wood production and as biofuels. At the end of 2018, the fair value of Stora Enso’s biological assets, including indirect share of forest assets through equity accounted investments, totalled EUR 3.3 billion.

“Over the past 15 years, we’ve watched the shortage rise and fall with economic trends, but it ballooned last year to the highest level we’ve seen to date,” said ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello. “The combination of a surging freight economy and carriers’ need for qualified drivers could severely disrupt the supply chain. The increase in the driver shortage should be a warning to carriers, shippers and policymakers because if conditions don’t change substantively, our industry could be short just over 100,000 drivers in five years and 160,000 drivers in 2028.”

For the first time ever, GPA handled more than half a million container lifts to rail, growing that number by more than 72,000, or 16.6%. The 506,707 intermodal boxes constituted more than 20% of total containers, another record.

„The Authority's investment in the Mason Mega Rail project is coming just in time for our capacity to stay ahead of demand, ensuring the free flow of intermodal cargo,“ said Will McKnight, GPA's Board Chairman. „The first phase of the project will be complete this year, cutting rail transit time to Midwestern markets by 24 hours.“

CEO Christian Fisher spoke to attendees after flying in from Atlanta.
