BEUC: New lab test shows EU needs rules on chemicals used in making coffee cups, straws and other paper food packaging

BRUSSELS, July 25, 2019 (Press Release) -A new lab test shows that food packaging made of coloured paper and cardboard - such as coffee cups and straws - may contain and release chemicals originating from the inks used for printing. Paper is the second most used food packaging material after plastic. Unlike plastics, however, there are no EU rules governing paper’s use as a food contact material.

HEIDENHEIM, Germany and GRUVON, Sweden , July 30, 2019 (Press Release) -On June 28, 2019, the BM 7, the most modern, most efficient and largest board machine in the world, was successfully commissioned at the BillerudKorsnäs production facility in Gruvön, Sweden. The Voith XcelLine board machine has been equipped with a pioneering technological setup that sets new performance benchmarks for production lines for four different board grades. At a design speed of 1,200 m/min and web width of 8,800 mm, the capacity of the BM 7 is 550,000 metric tons per year.

MADRID, Spain, July 23, 2019 (Press Release) -Ence’s biofactory in Pontevedra has received the “Zero Waste” environmental certificate granted by AENOR to those organizations that carry out a more efficient management of their waste and that are capable of valuing it.

The Director of the Pontevedra’s Biofactory, Paulo Gaia, together with the Director of Quality and Environment of the plant, Carlos Casas, have been responsible for collecting this recognition that only five companies have throughout Spain.

UK grocery chain Iceland to trial first plastic bag free store using paper, jute and cotton alternatives

DEESIDE, UK, July 25, 2019 (Press Release) -Iceland has launched an industry leading trial, removing plastic bags altogether from one of its stores, as it continues to lead the way in the fight against plastic.

The trial will run in Iceland’s Hackney store, with customers being offered extra-strong paper bags for 15p. The bags can hold up to 16kg–the equivalent of 70 packs of Iceland’s No Bull Burgers (226g per pack).
