UK ban on plastic straws, stirrers, and cotton buds in England to come into force in April 2020

LONDON, May 22, 2019 (Press Release) -Environment Secretary Michael Gove has today confirmed a ban on plastic straws, drinks stirrers, and plastic stemmed cotton buds in England, following overwhelming public support for the move.

Following an open consultation, a ban on the supply of plastic straws, drinks stirrers and cotton buds will come into force in April 2020. The ban will include exemptions to ensure that those with medical needs or a disability are able to continue to access plastic straws.

NEW YORK, May 21, 2019 (Business Wire) -Colgate-Palmolive is expanding its commitment to reducing waste by joining TerraCycle’s Loop initiative for reusable, refillable packaging, beginning with pilot programs in the U.S. and France.

Colgate and other consumer products companies today joined Loop and founding retail partners in the U.S. Kroger Co. and Walgreens to announce a pilot that will serve New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Washington, D.C. Last week, Loop and the retailer Carrefour announced the launch of a similar test serving Paris.

US chain Whole Foods to ban plastic straws, offer smaller produce bags in ‘war on disposable plastic’

NEW YORK, May 21, 2019 (CNN Money) -Responding to customers' demands, Whole Foods is ramping up its war on disposable plastic.

The Amazon-owned company announced Monday that will stop offering plastic straws across all of its 500 stores in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada. Whole Foods claims it's the first national grocery chain to make the environmentally friendly move.

Nassau County, NY, legislature votes to ban styrofoam packaging for takeout foods

MELVILLE, NY, May 21, 2019 (Local News) -Nassau merchants no longer will be able to use polystyrene, commonly known as Styrofoam, a staple for restaurant takeout, steaming cups of coffee and packaging material, under a bill passed Monday by the Nassau County Legislature.

Nassau's ban on selling or distributing polystyrene products will take effect Jan. 1. Suffolk County passed a similar bill last month, and a New York City ban took effect at the start of this year.
