HELSINKI, Nov. 27, 2018 (Press Release) -UPM has today published a new biodiversity commitment, which is one of the company's responsibility targets for 2030. The new commitment and programme will be presented today at the Conference of the Parties (COP14) of the United Nations' Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.

The aim of the commitment is to continuously improve the diversity of UPM's own forests in Finland. The company owns 570,000 hectares of forest, and managing these forests sustainably is essential to ensure the supply of wood.

It is a big pleasure to announce that PM4 with new PMP Intelli-Jet V hydraulic headbox, fourdrinier and reel has started up smoothly on September 10th at 4:12 am of local time. First jumbo roll appeared on the reel at 4:54 am. Two days later, machine started to produce saleable paper.

Norske Skog Tasman in New Zealand feels squeeze of trebling power bill, fears worse to come; production at 50%

AUCKLAND, NZ, Nov. 23, 2018 (New Zealand Herald) -A Kawerau paper mill already feeling the crunch of power prices which have trebled is questioning the timing of a planned outage over the weekend by national grid operator Transpower.

Allan Holden, energy manager at Norske Skog Tasman, says Transpower needed to be more flexible with maintenance work on its HVDC link, a six-day undertaking that will likely result in higher prices in the North Island.

"They [Transpower] have not been flexible enough to say 'is this the right time to be doing it?'" Holden said.

World Container Index down by 4,7%

The World Container Index assessed by Drewry, a composite of container freight rates on 8 major routes to/from the US, Europe and Asia is down by 4.7% to $1,720.94 per 40ft container (updated Thursday, 22 November 2018).

Drewry provides container freight rate benchmarking covering over 8,000 port pair combinations via its Benchmarking Club.
