Zero Waste Europe supports ENVI committee proposal to cut funding for incineration

BRUSSELS, Oct. 25, 2018 (Press Release) -The committee’s opinion recognises the transition to a Circular Economy as an important objective that the Cohesion Fund should serve. 

In this matter, the ENVI committee proposed to direct EU funding to higher waste hierarchy options – waste prevention, reuse and recycling – to help member states advance  towards a Circular Economy, while excluding funding for residual waste treatment facilities, e.g. waste incineration  and MBT (Mechanical Biological Treatment).

EUROPEN supports measures that address the problem of plastic pollution effectively, that are harmonised and implementable by Member States and industry. We reiterate the packaging supply chain’s ongoing commitments and investments to improve the circularity of all packaging, including plastics. We are concerned that certain elements of the EP Resolution adopted today have not been adequately examined and might not achieve the SUP’s objectives.

European Parliament announces ban on single-use plastics by 2021
