This makes Metsä Group the world’s largest producer of softwood market pulp. The bioproduct mill produced its millionth tonne of pulp on 8 August 2018.
The bioproduct mill was started up on 15 August 2017, on schedule and within budget. The start-up phase progressed in line with the target curve.

FSC to develop generic roadmap for ending disassociation with businesses involved in forest conversion issues

BONN, Germany, Aug. 16, 2018 (Press Release) -The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) has begun work on a comprehensive generic roadmap that will become a baseline for possibly ending disassociation, with businesses that have been (directly or indirectly) involved in significant forest conversion issues and unacceptable activities, as defined by the FSC Policy for Association.

It will offer a robust set of guidelines and a framework that will be adaptable to businesses involved in future processes to end disassociation to support credible, transparent and fair procedures.

EU sets new environmental standards for waste treatment

BRUSSELS, Aug. 17, 2018 (Press Release) -New emissions and efficiency standards will help national authorities to lower the environmental impact of the largest waste treatment installations in the EU, dealing with both hazardous and non-hazardous waste. This represents around 4,000 installations.

The new specifications are the result of a review of the Best Available Techniques (BAT) Reference Document (BREF) for Waste Treatment. The review's BAT conclusions were published today in the Official Journal of the EU.

Forests group FSC halts plan to endorse Indonesian paper giant

JAKARTA, Aug. 17, 2018 (Associated Press (AP)) -The main global group for certifying sustainable wood has suspended plans to give its influential endorsement to Indonesian paper giant Sinarmas after revelations it cut down tropical forests and used an opaque corporate structure to hide its activities.

The Forest Stewardship Council said Thursday that it had halted a process that could have enabled the Asia Pulp & Paper arm of Sinarmas to be readmitted to the organization.

FSC has taken this decision in order to reassess the roadmap process while it awaits further information from APP related to its corporate structure and alleged unacceptable forest man-agement activities by companies thought to be related to APP. Dialogue with APP will con-tinue in view of ensuring full disclosure about these issues.

The assignment includes process engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical, automation and instrumentation engineering, as well as permitting engineering and project scheduling.

BANGOR, ME, Aug. 16, 2018 (Bangor Daily News) -State officials are investigating a wastewater leak from a Baileyville pulp and tissue mill into the St. Croix River.

The spill, which occurred Friday, Aug. 10, involved more than a half million gallons of partially treated wastewater that was discharged from an effluent line, according to Scott Beal, spokesman for St. Croix Tissue, Inc. The tissue company and parent company Woodland Pulp LLC employ more than 300 people at the mill, which is located on the St. Croix River in Baileyville on the U.S.-Canada border.
