Forest products, pulp and paper rail freight broadly lower through 11 weeks of 2017

OAKLAND, CA, March 24, 2017 (RISI) -The Assn of American Railroads reported total North American forest products freight in the week ending March 18 at 17,634 carloads was down 3.9% from a year ago, and through 11 weeks at 191,222 carloads was 6% below year-ago levels.

In the week, US forest products volume was off 0.7% to 9,910 carloads, Canada was down 7.9% to 7,697 carloads, and Mexico was up 58.8% to 27 carloads. Through March 18, US forest products freight was down 5% to 108,536 carloads, Canada was down 7.3% to 82,467 carloads, and Mexico was up 6.3% to 219 carloads.

AAR showed total North American carloads in the week rose 6.3% and year-to-date was 5.9% higher. The largest commodity on the railroads, coal, was 17% higher in the week and up 14.4% year-to-date.

Six major railroads surveyed reported mostly lower pulp and paper, and lumber and wood products freight volume through the first 11 weeks of the year.

CNreported pulp and paper freight in the week ending March 18 was 0.3% lower to 3,203 carloads and year-to-date was down 2% from 2016 to 35,820 carloads. Lumber and wood products in the week was 5% lower to 3,284 carloads and year-to-date was down 2.3% to 35,203 carloads.

CSXreported its pulp and paper rail freight in the week was down 9.8% to 2,450 carloads and year-to-date was 1% lower than a year ago to 31,018 carloads. Lumber and wood products in the week was down 2% to 1,117 carloads and year-to-date was 3.2% higher to 12,044 carloads.

Union Pacificshowed pulp and paper freight in the week was down 1% to 1,476 carloads and year-to-date was up 2% to 18,758 carloads. Lumber/wood was down 2% in the week to 2,376 carloads and year-to-date was down 2% to 24,532 carloads.

BNSFshowed pulp and paper freight in the week rose 8.8% to 1,245 carloads and year to date was 3.5% lower to 14,992 carloads. Lumber/wood in the week was down 6% and year-to-date was down 5.7%.

Canadian Pacificshowed pulp and paper freight in the week was down 5.2% at 751 carloads, and year-to-date was down 9.7% at 7,748 carloads. Lumber/wood products in the week rose 9.2% to 616 carloads and year-to-date was up 0.3% to 5,701 carloads.

Genesee & Wyomingreported its pulp and paper freight through two months of 2017 was down 6.2% to 26,017 carloads, and in February was down 7.5% at 12,046 carloads. Lumber/wood over two months was 3.2% lower to 21,336 carloads and in February was down 5% to 10,654 carloads.
