SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 20, 2012 (RISI) -Port workers at 15 Gulf and East coast ports expect to strike on Dec. 30, according to a letter yesterday from International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) pres Harold Daggett to local unions.

The strike is to begin at 12:01 AM on Sunday, Dec. 30, and would follow a Dec. 29 deadline that is required for the ILA and United States Maritime Alliance to reach a labor contract agreement.

"Unfortunately, master contract negotiations are not progressing well and it is expected that there will be a coast-wide strike beginning at 12:01 AM on Dec. 30," said Daggett in yesterday's letter to all local ILA unions.

Daggett laid out plans for developing committees for picketing, and noted that the ILA was to not handle or honor containerized cargo. However, ILA members were to handle perishable commodities, automobiles, and military cargo.
