Paper sludge byproduct charcoal eyed for cleaning up soil at Fukushima nuclear accident site

FUJI, Japan, Oct. 31, 2016 (Local News) -Charcoal from paper mill sludge that once polluted the ocean here southwest of Tokyo could be used to restore contaminated land near the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.

An experiment in 2011 showed that the charcoal is effective in reducing radioactive substances in soil and preventing the absorption of cesium by plants, said research leader Ai Van Tran.

RICHMOND, VA, Oct. 31, 2016 (Press Release) -Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd., Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd., and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha have agreed, after the resolution by the board of directors of each company held today, and subject to regulatory approval from the authorities, to establish a new joint-venture company to integrate the container shipping businesses (including worldwide terminal operating businesses excluding Japan) of all three companies and to sign a business integration contract and a shareholders agreement.

Thimm Verpackung to start up new corrugated cardboard plant in Germany in early 2017

NORTHEIM, Germany, Oct. 12, 2016 (Press Release) -Thimm Verpackung is building one of most state-of-the-art corrugated cardboard plants in Europe between Nuremberg and Munich. The plant is being built on a 90,000 square metre site near the Holledau motorway interchange. Operations are scheduled to start in early 2017. The investment for the first expansion stage amounts to around 60 million EUR. Around 150 people will be employed at the site in the medium-term.

BRUSSELS, Oct. 27, 2016 (Press Release) -Greater availability of domestically-collected recovered paper means China “now has its own legs to stand on”, the latest BIR Paper Division meeting was told by Wade Schuetzeberg, Executive Director - European Region, American Chung Nam BV of the Netherlands. Some 80m tonnes was now sourced annually within China, comparing to imports that peaked above 30m tonnes in 2013 and are expected to amount to around 26-27m tonnes this year.
